Eric Steneroden

PS: For those members who don't know you very well, please tell us a little about yourself, (family, job, etc.).

Eric: I live in the Battle Creek area with my wife Pat . We each have two grown sons, all four living in distant states. I have had Pyramid Real Estate Co, Inc. since 1972 and continue to do business as an appraiser and as a real estate broker.

PS: When did you get interested in golf?

Eric: My dad was an avid golfer and won the Anoka Club Championship in 1957. That same year kids could play at Como on Thursday mornings before 7AM for 25 cents. I never missed (and I still ask).

PS: How long have you been a member of the Como Men's Club?

Eric: My friend Jack Curtis encouraged me to join in the early 1980's.

PS: I know that you have been a member at some private golf courses. How would you rate your Como experience against other places you have played.

Eric: Of course, private golf courses have advantages in facilities, as well as having a multitude of social events available that are not typically part of the public golf experience. Having said that, Como is in the best shape ever, and the greens are second to none. Also, the staff measures up to anyplace I've been associated with. I am treated very well at Como. Also, my last year at a private club cost $1.50 per stroke. I don't miss that.

PS: What are some good golf tips you've received through the years?

Eric: I will mention two of the hardest to master. "Play every shot as its the most important of the day." (nothing to do with playing slowly), and, "No matter how many fundamentals and tips you are working on, focus on only one during the swing."

PS: What is the best advise you've received at Como?

Eric: "Always rent a cart. The walkers have to put their beer someplace", and, "Nothing positive will accrue to your game by watching Wayne Miller swing. It is considered poor sportsmanship to turn your back. Just close your eyes."

PS:
You are in your early 60's. Are you intimidated by younger golfers?

Eric: They get more second looks from the pretty cart beverage girls. That is discouraging.

PS: Tell us some of your most embarrassing moments at Como.

Eric: Brrinngg. Oops, that's my cell phone. I guess the interview is over Mags.

Gary Ketchel

PS : We have embarked on a new golf season. Can you share with us what you did during the past off season?

Gary: I enjoy shotgun sports and shot in three leagues at Wild Wings of Oneka in Hugo. Once in a while I would shoot some pheasants out there as well. I get to spend extra time with my grand-daughters (both in the terrible twos) and that’s probably more enjoyable than anything.

PS: What is the best advice you ever received to improve your golf game?

Gary: Start enjoying adult beverages before the turn. God, I’m golfing with the Millers too much!!! Seriously, stand up taller to the ball. I tend to bend over too much and it keeps me from swinging freely through the ball.

PS: How did you get started in golf?

Gary: 15 years ago my family was at Madden’s for a small reunion and some of them were golfers so I borrowed a set of clubs, took a lesson at Madden’s and I was hooked.

PS: Did you play other sports?

Gary: I never played sports in school, believe it or not I was kind of a shrimp until after high school so I worked and chased the skirts while the jocks were at practice. I played some softball when I worked at Deluxe Corp but that was mostly for the 12 oz curls. I’ve been Trap Shooting for 30 years and have been a scratch shooter for 20 years. As I mentioned earlier I also shoot Sporting Clays but have not quite gotten scratch but I’m closing in on it.

PS: In your opinion, what is the best part of your game?

Gary: My attitude. I don’t get too excited or too down.

PS: What do you do to relax away from the golf course?

Gary: I like kicking back and spending time with my wife Nancy, the kids and grandkids. I go on an occasional fishing trip, salmon at Lake Michigan or a fly in to Canada.

PS: You direct the junior golf program at Como. How did you get involved with that and what gives you the most satisfaction from your efforts with the program?

Gary: When Brian Miller left Como to work at Eagle Valley in 2000 John Shimpach asked me to run the program and I jump right in. It is without question the most fun responsibility I have ever had. The most satisfying part – when John Shimpach gets nervous about all the tee times I’m using for Juniors. That tells me I’m doing something right, for junior golfers!
